Pont de Beauvoisin, city of furnitures craft

"History - At the heart of this story is a bridge. A simple bridge of wood, then of stone, thrown on the cut breach, between Dauphinoise land and County of Savoy, by the Guiers to stubborn waters. Built, carried away, rebuilt, for how many centuries has it twinned the opposite banks of the torrent?

Probably for a long time, before this year of grace 1115, when the present name of Pont-de-Beauvoisin appeared for the first time.

Land of borders open to the passage of conquering armies as well as to the reflux of defeated fighters, Pont-de-Beauvoisin probably derives its name from its strategic position between France and Italy, «Pons Belli Vicinus» which means ""Neighbouring Bridge of War".

Unless it is the «Beau Voisin» or «Bon Voisin» that gave each other the inhabitants of the two banks, grouped in the 12th century around the same fortress and a common priory, before the endless quarrel between Dauphins and Counts of Savoy came to tear apart the town on each side of the famous bridge.

1515, the bridge destroyed by a flood is rebuilt in stone, on the order of François 1er, to allow his regiments stationed at the Pont-de-Beauvoisin to join him in battle on the battlefields of Italy.
The apogee of the Renaissance in Pont-de-Beauvoisin is reached thanks to the Italian architects and artists called by Francis I returning from the wars of Italy. His influence will be very strong in the city he named «Cité du Meuble». Oak, walnut, marble, wrought iron and enamel are the most commonly used materials.
